International Invitation

The Ibero-American Textile Network, and the Costa Rican-North American Cultural Center, organizers of this International Encounter to be held from September 6 through October 12, 2010 in San José, Costa Rica, in cooperation with the Spain Cultural Center, the Mexico Cultural Institute, Omar Dengo Foundation, the Veritas University, House of Culture “José Figueres Ferrer” of Popular Bank, and the National University are pleased to invite all interested practitioners of textile creation—and their promoters—to the First International Encounter of the Ibero-American Textile Network.

THEME
This First Encounter conceives textiles as Sustainable Tradition & Responsible Innovation as of the point of its diversity of styles, geography, history, and applications, which generates innovating proposals impacting the development of persons, community, the environment, and global society…
Sustainable Tradition & Responsible Innovation looks to integrate the textile creation object in its diverse uses, with its experimental process—or its ancestral-indigenous character, as part of a complex cultural reality, full of clearness and confusion.
Sustainable Tradition & Responsible Innovation includes the concepts, “environment, society, and human being,” as a supportive alliance, which is committed to innovation and change. Said conceptual structure suggests the transforming possibility through creative practice, which with its tools and strategies allows the aesthetic experience to be incorporated into community, not only as contemplative possibility but also as an opportunity for human development.
The International Encounter is a show selected by a Curatorial Committee, and will be exhibited at Gallery Sophia Wanamaker at the Costa Rican-North American Cultural Center in San José, Costa Rica.
The work must allude to the above mentioned theme, and will be judged by photograph by an International Jury composed by Rebecca Stevens, Contemporary Art Consultant at the Textile Museum in Washington, DC; Beatrijs Sterk, General Secretary of the European Textile Network, and María Enriqueta Guardia, Professor and Art Historian at the University of Costa Rica. The Curatorial Committee’s ruling shall be irrevocable.
The jury will be present in Costa Rica, and will choose those works worthy of special distinction in three modalities: art, traditional textile, and contemporary textile design.
